March 2002 found the enthusiast graphics market between familiar DirectX 8 hardware and a new wave of GeForce4 boards. 3DChipset’s month mixed board reviews, display technology, utility work, and news about the publication itself.

March 30: Radeon 8500 under a technical lens

EFA11 noted a Beyond3D review of the 64 MB Radeon 8500 that concentrated on antialiasing performance and image quality, texture filtering, transform-and-lighting behavior, and multitexturing. The framing marked an important shift in enthusiast reviewing: a card could no longer be described adequately by one headline frame-rate number. The rendering path, driver maturity, and behavior with quality features enabled mattered just as much.

March 29: displays and all-in-one boards

A review notice for the SyncMaster 151MP described a 15-inch LCD with television and remote-control features. Flat panels were still judged against CRT expectations, so connectivity, motion, scaling, and the practical size of the screen were part of the discussion. The same day brought notices for ATi All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV coverage. That board’s appeal rested on combining 3D acceleration with television, video, and multi-display functions—exactly the kind of feature mix that complicated simple benchmark rankings.

Another March 29 item mentioned two Korean GeForce4 Ti boards with different output configurations: one with video-in/video-out and another with D-Sub, DVI, and TV output. Such port lists may look routine now, but they helped define whether a board worked with the monitors and video equipment readers already owned.

March 28: seven GeForce4 Ti boards

A seven-board comparison placed reference and retail GeForce4 Ti4400 and Ti4600 designs side by side. The accompanying discussion explained “chip binning”: processors from a related design could be qualified for different operating speeds and sold into separate product tiers. Cooling, memory selection, connectors, software bundles, and board layout then gave vendors room to distinguish products using the same core architecture.

March 26–27: crowded review benches

Entries covered GeForce4 MX and TV-output utility compatibility, Leadtek and MSI GeForce4 Ti boards, a Creative Ti4400, an ATi-based Gigabyte board, and a GeForce4 MX440 roundup. The editorial desk paid attention to overclocking, cooling assemblies, television output, image quality, and the differences between value and high-end parts. A 3Dlabs interview also arrived while the company’s direction was a subject of industry interest.

March 3–4: 3DChipset comes back online

The publication returned after a hosting interruption and announced that the news and main pages were available while other sections were being rebuilt. On March 4, Solomon reported that the utilities section was online, still being tested, and intended to become a central part of the site again. That section’s taxonomy is now described on the graphics utility reference.

The same early-March desk covered initial GeForce4 Ti4600 reviews, Radeon 8500 pricing, All-In-Wonder boards, and driver releases. Some original posts used the combative language common to hardware forums of the time; this record keeps the technical subjects and dates while focusing on what the hardware and software questions actually were.

What the month reveals

March 2002 sat between established fixed-function accelerators and a rapidly expanding programmable era. Coverage moved easily from a board launch to antialiasing quality, driver branches, monitor output, cooling, and game-specific behavior. That mixture shows why enthusiasts treated hardware, software, and visual quality as parts of the same story rather than separate beats.

The month also illustrates the limits of period reporting. Early results could change with a later driver or a corrected test, and short news notices often summarized work performed elsewhere. The dated sequence is most useful when read for the hardware questions it raised rather than its personal disputes or commercial asides. Contemporary conclusions remained provisional as new tests and later drivers appeared.
